Candidate Forum on URTV Oct. 31 and Nov. 1

If you missed last Thursday’s Town Council Candidate Forum, you can watch it on URTV (Cable Channel 20) 7:30-9 p.m. tonight (Wednesday, October 31) or 8-9:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 1. One thing to note is the opening remarks made by each candidate have been omitted. This was due to technical interference which made 3 or 4 of the candidates remarks unintelligible. It was felt to be fair all opening remarks should be removed.

Some clips from the Candidate Forum are also available on the WeavervilleNews page on YouTube.

A couple reminders about the upcoming election, because I’ve been told that many people aren’t sure where they need to vote:

Voting takes place Tuesday, November 6. Polling locations are open 6:30 a.m. until 7:30 p.m. There are three voting places:

  • If you’re in Weaverville proper, vote at the Town Hall (30 South Main Street)
  • If you’re in Woodland Hills, vote at the Woodland Hills Baptist Church (50 Woodland Hills Road, Asheville)
  • If you’re in Reems Creek, vote at the Reems Creek Fire Station (730 Reems Creek Road)

Here’s a sample ballot for this year’s election, which includes all 9 candidates running for Town Council. We are electing three new council members: http://www.buncombecounty.org/common/boe/BCBEballots_8.pdf

If you have questions or need additional information about where, when, or how to vote, please contact the Buncombe County Board of Elections at 250-4200.

Just a reminder: if you still have Bloomin’ Bucks from Reems Creek Valley Nursery, you have until Monday, October 29 to redeem them.  They’re closed on Sundays, so that leaves today, Saturday, and Monday for plant shopping.  They’re located at 70 Monticello Road, but if you have Bloomin’ Bucks you already knew that, didn’t you?

Ingles Expansion: Car Wash and Starbucks

If you’re wondering what’s going on with the land clearing next to Ingles on Weaver Boulevard, their store manager tells me they are expanding the store, adding a car wash and possibly an in-store Starbucks.  The Starbucks addition is not yet set in stone though, so I’ll have to keep you posted on that one.

North Buncombe Beta Clubs Trick or Treating for the Gift of Sight

The North Buncombe High School and North Buncombe Middle School Beta Clubs are collecting eyeglasses this Halloween in conjunction with the Give the Gift of Sight program.

Beta Club members will be “trick or treating” for used eyeglasses in different neighborhoods on Halloween. They will place door hangers throughout the neighborhoods ahead of time to let you know about the collection (and to give you time to find all those old eyeglasses you’ve been wondering what to do with).

If you would like to donate before Halloween, or if you live in a neighborhood which doesn’t have any Beta Club trick or treaters, you can drop off eyeglasses in drop boxes at these locations: North Buncombe High School, North Buncombe Middle School, Weaverville Drug Company, If It’s Special, Weaverville Dance Academy, North Asheville Baptist Church, Woodland Hills Church, and Locust Grove Baptist Church.

According to their website, Give the Gift of Sight is a charitable program which provides free eyewear to underprivileged individuals in North America and developing countries around the world. The program also sponsors mission trips where volunteering optometrists and mission workers hand-deliver the donated glasses.

There’s a number of important issues which these councilmembers will be voting on, including what happens with the McPhail Property and whether to let Asheville control our upcoming ABC store.  If you care about these issues, the future of Weaverville, or are still undecided about who to vote for, be sure to attend this Forum.
