Winter Morning on Main Street

Winter Morning on Main Street
The main streets look clear now, but early this morning I literally skated across an ice-covered Main Street to get to Well-Bred Bakery (yep, that chocolate croissant was worth it).
MyWeaverville.com Reader Survey
MyWeaverville.com has been in existence for a little over 6 months now, so it seemed like a good time to set up a survey and request a little feedback from all of you. I promise I won’t do this too often, but it is the quickest and easiest way for me to learn about how you use and feel about the site.
I’ve tried to make this as painless as possible — 6 easy questions (5 multiple choice and 1 optional comments section). It’s also completely anonymous - no name or e-mail address necessary. Thanks in advance for your time!
Weaverville Artist Patti Quinn Hill Exhibits at UNC-A Highsmith Union Gallery
Weaverville artist Patti Quinn Hill will be exhibiting at University of North Carolina Asheville’s Highsmith Union Gallery March 11-26. Also scheduled during the exhibition are an Artist Talk and Basket Workshop.
From Shaker to Paper
Patti Quinn HillTraditional and contemporary at the same time, the baskets created by Patti Quinn Hill are spirited, graceful, and immaculately crafted out of archival paper. Hill begins with a traditional Shaker form, but from there her concepts, materials, and colors are unique and modern. From Shaker to Paper highlights the evolution of her baskets. Patti Quinn Hill is a member of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and the National Basketry Organization. This exhibit is in celebration of women’s work and Women’s History Month.
Also scheduled during the exhibition:
Artist Talk
An artist talk with Hill on Thursday, March 20 at 6 p.m. Reception to follow
Paper Basket Workshop
Saturday, March 15, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. with lunch break
All levels are welcome to have fun weaving a sturdy paper basket designed to hold beverage napkins. Students will paint their heavy watercolor paper with acrylic paint using many surface design techniques, then cut the paper into even strips using a pasta cutter. Weaving will be done over a mold using traditional basketry techniques, and curl embellishments will be emphasized to create your one-of-a-kind basket. Cost is $15 for students and $60 for the general public (all materials included). More information and registration information here: http://www.unca.edu/highsmith/gallery/images/Pattiworkshop.pdf
Highsmith Union Gallery is open to the public Monday-Friday 9 a.m.- 9 p.m. and on weekends 10 a.m.-6 p.m. when class is in session. It’s located in the Highsmith University Union on the University of North Carolina Asheville campus.
Community Gathering March 1 to Discuss Plans for Concrete Plant Public Hearing
A community gathering to discuss plans for the upcoming concrete plant public hearing will take place Saturday, March 1, beginning at 4:30 pm., at the Pohl-Zaretsky home. The concrete plant public hearing remains scheduled for Noon on Wednesday, March 12. If you are concerned about the proposed concrete plant on Murphy Hill Road, you should consider attending this gathering. Please RSVP and get directions by calling 645-9291 or e-mailing pohlzaret@aol.com.
Here’s the information Aaron provided me about the March 1 gathering. If you need further details please contact him at the number or e-mail address listed above:
- We will smoke a large turkey, provide tabouli (a middle eastern salad), and some dessert. If you are so inclined, please bring some food or beverage to add to the “stone soup”! If you can’t, please just bring yourselves and share the food and drink which I am sure will be plentiful.
- All are welcome, don’t hesitate to bring children.
- If the weather cooperates, we will have an outdoor bonfire.
- We have limited parking by our home. If you are able, please park at the field to the right of the driveway (it will be marked) and walk up the hill to our house. If you choose to drive, please turn around at the top of the hill and park facing down hill. You might want to offer folks walking up the hill a lift. (Directions available when you RSVP).
- Dress informally and prepare to meet your neighbors and have a great time.
- Please RSVP and let us know how many are in your party so we can prepare.
Several of you have already made generous contributions to North Buncombe Association of Concerned Citizens. If you have not and would like to do so, please mail your tax deductible contribution to Martha Claxton at 240 Upper Flat Creek Rd., Weaverville, NC 28787.
This upcoming public hearing is by far our best (and least expensive) hope for making sure that the concrete plant is not built on the Murphy Hill site. If we do lose, we will have to appeal, and we can only appeal utilizing the facts that were introduced at the public hearing. Numbers do count at the hearing so it is important that EVERYONE come to speak to register your concern - if only for a few moments.
