Mayor Stroud Will Not Seek Re-Election

Published July 8th, 2009

I had been hearing rumors that Mayor Bett Stroud, who has served as mayor of Weaverville since 1993, would not be running for re-election this year. She just confirmed that rumor via e-mail and gave this statement:

I will not seek another term as mayor.  I am grateful for the support that the citizens of Weaverville have given me during my 20 years of public service in town government.  It has been a wonderful job that has provided me with an opportunity to work for the betterment of the town.  Major projects have included earning Tree City USA status for the town in 1990 and every year since, passing a landscape ordinance and other ordinances that have helped us maintain the town’s small-town character while allowing for commercial growth at designated locations, full landscape planting and playground installation at Lake Louise Park, early-phase implementation of the Main Street Nature Park plan, construction of the Ivy River Water Treatment Plant, a new Town Hall, new Public Works facility, and new Fire Station–all of these buildings very much needed to replace inadequate facilities.

This year has been especially exciting with the construction of a sidewalk linking Lake Louise Park with sidewalks in the center of town and extending the North Main Street sidewalk to the post office.  We hope soon to cross the front of the post office property with a sidewalk.  The significant progress that has been made in our Main Street Nature Park makes me hopeful that this park will eventually be another gem setting our town apart from so many others our size.

We are very fortunate to have a charming downtown where people can live right on Main Street and at other locales within easy walking distance of shops and restaurants.  It has been one of my top priorities to preserve the quality of life throughout the town.  Our town has character and I hope that those who come after me will respect and preserve that.

It has been a thrilling two decades of service.  Many more of my goals have been accomplished than I ever thought possible.  Of course, there is a long list of town officials to whom I will be ever-lastingly grateful for their superb performance–including  fellow members of the Town Council, the town manager and his staff, department heads and departmental employees, and volunteers on various town boards.  My satisfaction in serving the town is at a very high level.  I depart the office of mayor with pride in our town and gratitude to those who supported me along the way.

Thanks to Mayor Stroud for her many years of service to the Town of Weaverville.
