More on the Weaverville Bus Service Cancellation

Published October 28th, 2009

The Asheville-Weaverville bus service was going to end on October 31, 2009, but at last night’s Asheville City Council meeting, council members voted to keep the service running for an additional week. The unanimous vote allows those who were using the service more time to find alternative transportation.

Also of note, according to this report provided to the Asheville Mayor and Council, Mountain Mobility has “indicated that they are going to change their routing to mimic the current routing making sure that all of their patterns use Main Street in downtown Weaverville.”  I’ll be sure to post information about those route changes as soon as they’re made available.

Update: Here’s the information about the Mountain Mobility Route Changes:

North Buncombe Trailblazer Route Changes to Meet Needs
On November 9, Mountain Mobility will implement changes to its North Buncombe Trailblazer route and schedule in order to help fill the gap in public transportation services left by the discontinuation of Asheville Transit’s Route 54 serving the Weaverville area. The NCDOT performed an assessment of Asheville Transit’s route and determined that it did not comply with federal guidelines for intercity routes. Asheville Transit’s Route 54 will end on November 8.

Mountain Mobility began operation of the North Buncombe Trailblazer in February 2009 to increase the availability of public transportation services to outlying parts of northern Buncombe County. The North Buncombe Trailblazer will continue to serve much of the same route and destinations, including the Super Wal-Mart/Lowe’s and Weaver Boulevard, and in addition will provide service to Arvato Digital Services (former Sonopress) and along North Main Street in Weaverville. The North Buncombe Trailblazer connect to Asheville Transit Route 2 at Manor Ridge Apartments so riders can transfer and ride the city bus to the downtown transit center.

For more information, download a printable brochure of the new November 9 schedule for the North Buncombe Trailblazer Route (English | En Español) and a copy of the schedule for ATS Route 2, or call Customer Services at 258-0186, Option 5. (TDD: 828/252-4085).
