At the Tailgate Market Sept. 1

Published August 31st, 2010

From this week’s Weaverville Tailgate Market e-newsletter:

Last week was great, thanks to all our loyal shoppers and hardworking vendors for such a bountiful and bustling market!

Probably the most interesting thing to all of you: our corn-and-watermelon guy will be back, with an even bigger truckload (load will be bigger, I would guess it’s the same truck…) of goods.

Possibly also interesting: watercress, apples, eggplant, melons, hot and sweet peppers.  Fresh basil, heirloom tomatoes, winter and summer squash, potatoes, garlic.  Organic artisan breads & pastries, scones, cookies, other sweet and savory baked things.

Chicken, pork, lamb, beef, eggs, perhaps rabbit.

Fragrant, all-natural soaps.  The usual other stuff that I forget.

See you Wednesday!

The Weaverville Tailgate Market is held on Wednesdays at the Community Center parking lot above Lake Louise, 2:30-6:30 p.m.

At the Tailgate Market Aug. 25

Published August 25th, 2010

From this week’s Weaverville Tailgate Market e-newsletter:

Hello from the Friendly Market Reminder Service.  Well, we’ll let you assume it is friendly, anyway…

This week will feature a special appearance by Corners Knob Farm with quite literally a truckload of sweet corn and watermelons.  If there’s anything more exciting to be had at a tailgate market during the summer, I can’t think of what it is.

Granny Grunts BBQ will also be there, as well as our wonderful pizza folks and some tempting New Orleans-style desserts.

And of course our regular vendors, just because they aren’t new and exciting we sincerely hope you continue to shop with them every week.  They will have: tomatoes, tomatillos, potatoes, summer & winter squash, herbs, eggplant, beans, peppers, onions, carrots, apples, grapes.  Boneless, skinless chicken breast, lamb, pork, beef.  Bread, pastries.  You know the routine here.

And a special message from our Beloved Market President:
Just want to mention that there has been some confusion between the Weaverville Tailgate Market (our market at Lake Louise on Wednesdays) and the Weaverville Market (on Monticello Rd on the weekend). The Weaverville Market was recently in the news and the subject of some problems, that is NOT the tailgate market.  We are alive and well, no problems.

So, see you Wednesday!

The Weaverville Tailgate Market is held on Wednesdays at the Community Center parking lot above Lake Louise, 2:30-6:30 p.m.

Published August 11th, 2010

Weaverville’s Maggie B’s Wine Bar & Specialty Store, buchi, and Lusty Monk Mustard will be among the 75+ vendors participating in the Asheville Wine and Food Festival this Saturday, August 14, 2010 at the new Expo Center at the WNC Agricultural Center (1301 Fanning Bridge Road, Asheville).  More info about the first-year event:

WNC Magazine Asheville Wine & Food Festival Grand Tasting on August 14, 2010

Celebration with convenience and value are a main focus of the WNC Magazine Asheville Wine & Food Festival’s Grand Tasting. Attendees will only need their ticket to enjoy access to every facet of the event on Saturday, August 14, from 1-5 p.m. Tickets are $35 (in advance, $40 at the door) and include food and wine samplings from more than 75 vendors, seminars and demonstrations, opportunity to view the WNC Chefs Challenge Finale, parking, and commemorative souvenirs including a wine glass and gift bag. A complete schedule is available on the festival’s website, www.ashevillewineandfood.com.

“We want everything about this experience to be convenient,” says Festival Director Bob Bowles. “Rather than charge individually for workshops and presentations, we decided one ticket would get you into everything at the Grand Tasting. Seating will be limited at the workshops, though, so you’ll want to get to those early.” Tickets are also easy to come by, as they can be purchased online at www.ashevillewineandfood.com or at local wine shops, including Hops & Vines in West Asheville, Maggie B’s in Weaverville, Vino Vino Wine Market in Woodfin, The Wine Studio of Asheville, and Weinhaus in Asheville.

The Grand Tasting will be at the new indoor Expo Center on the grounds of the WNC Agricultural Center at 1301 Fanning Bridge Road in Fletcher, across the road from the Asheville Airport. Bowles says this location was chosen for the ample parking surrounding the facility. Complimentary shuttles will also run once each hour from the Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar at 1 Battle Square in downtown Asheville. Seating is limited and will be on a first-come basis.

The WNC Magazine Asheville Wine & Food Festival Grand Tasting will feature more than 35 wineries and 50 food producers. A portion of the proceeds raised will benefit Slow Food Asheville and MANNA FoodBank. Each week this summer, the WNC Chefs Challenge has paired the region’s top chefs in competition to find the Best Chef in WNC. The final two chefs, Stewart Lyon and Rick Boyer, and their teams will compete at the Grand Tasting.

So we’re having our Summer Sizzle celebration, there will be free ice cream and activities for the kids — Angel Ridge Farm will lead a felting (water, not needle…) craft, and Scribbles will be there to paint faces and generally spread joy.

We’ve got humongous heirloom tomatoes, normal-sized tomatoes, TABLE GRAPES from Dillingham Farms (these are so very different from the characterless things you get at the grocery store, you’ve really got to try them).  Long Valley Farm will have apples, see preceding comment.  Mackey Farms will have rabbit meat.

And all the other stuff we usually have. Wonderful food abounds. Come check us out.

At the Tailgate Market July 21

Published July 21st, 2010

From this week’s Weaverville Tailgate Market e-newsletter:

First, here’s what’s new: okra, tomatoes, peaches! And we welcome this week Granny Grunts BBQ, I know nothing about them but you can check them out at www.grannygrunts.com if you like, and obviously you should check them out at the market…

Other stuff:
Beans — purple, yellow, green, greasy.
Squash — yellow, green, oblong, UFO-shaped, bulbous.
Greens — good raw, good cooked, and/or both.
Roots — red, golden, orange, white.
Berries — red, hopefully blue.
Jam — any color you could possibly imagine and some you haven’t thought of.
Bread — most of it is brown, but in this case that’s a good thing.
Plants — most of them are green, and again this is good.
Crafts — colors, textures, materials too numerous to mention.

LoafChild is still covetous of that stack of plastic garden pots you’ve got stashed, so should you desire to remove a little clutter, they will happily haul it away and make the children sort and clean them when they get them home (the pots, not the kids, although if the kids were not home the pots would still be waiting for them when they returned…)

All the vendors strongly desire your presence and disposable cash on Wednesday. Hey, you don’t even need to buy anything if there’s nothing you need, just stop by and give them some money because they’re so swell.

See you there!

(The Market is held every Wednesday, 2:30-6:30 p.m., at the Weaverville Community Center at Lake Louise)
