For four days each July and October, the Civic Center in Asheville comes alive with fine traditional and contemporary crafts.  The Fairs, a local tradition since 1948, showcase the work of members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild and feature craft demonstrations, regional music and entertainment.

Over 200 craftspeople fill the two levels of the Civic Center selling their works of clay, fiber, glass, leather, metal, mixed media, natural materials, paper, wood and jewelry. As members of the Southern Highland Craft Guild, the exhibiting artists have passed a rigorous jury process to become a part of the organization.  Membership is open to artists who live in the mountain counties of Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, the Carolinas, Tennessee, and the Virginias.

While locals and visitors can find crafts at numerous galleries, the Fairs are unique in that they offer people the opportunity to connect with the artists by purchasing directly from them.  The community this fosters is important to craftspeople and patrons alike.  In an age of mass production and imports, the connection to fine American craft and the individual maker is more relevant than ever.  The Fairs help the Southern Highland Craft Guild fulfill its mission to bring together the crafts and craftspeople of the Southern Highlands for the benefit of shared resources, education, marketing and conservation.

NBHS Odyssey of the Mind Team Fundraisers

Published April 20th, 2009

On April 3, North Buncombe High School’s Odyssey of the Mind team took second place in Division III in the Odyssey of the Mind State Competition.  The team competed in the “Earth Trek” category, which required teams to design and build a small vehicle to visit four locations. Each time the vehicle left a location, it had to look different in appearance. Their second place finish in the state competition means they will now travel to Iowa State University May 27-30 to represent North Carolina in the Odyssey of the Mind 2009 World Finals.

Traveling to Iowa, of course, costs money, so the team will be holding the following fundraisers to help raise money for their trip:

Yard Sale
Saturday, April 25, 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
Yard Sale at Rodney’s Auto Service (37 North Main Street Map).

Magazine Subscription Sales/Renewals
Stop by Art Accents and speak to Team Coach Carla for information.

Doors of Weaverville Poster

Did you know there’s a Doors of Weaverville poster?  I didn’t until I saw one at a friend’s house.  They were created by, and are available for sale at, Karpen Steel Custom Doors and Frames (181 Reems Creek Road Map).  They sent me this information about the poster, how it came about, how you can purchase one, and even how you can win one this month:

Weaverville based Karpen Steel Custom Doors & Frames is a manufacturing company with an artistic flair. Not only do they work with the creative ideas of architects manufacturing one of a kind openings for the commercial industry (visit the photo gallery at www.karpensteel.com to see) Rachel S. Smith, President of Karpen Steel, took her love of doors and the community one step further by publishing the Doors of Weaverville poster pictured above.

The idea came about after buying door posters from places where Rachel had lived and visited. Among her favorites are Doors of Vermont and Doors of Tennessee.

The Doors of Weaverville posters are available for sale for just $10 each including sales tax. They can be picked up Monday thru Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at 181 Reems Creek Road. Please note: shipping and handling are not included in cost.

Rachel is also giving away a poster through MyWeaverville.  Here’s those details:

Pajama Game March 26-29

Published March 19th, 2009

March 26-29 the North Buncombe High School Theatre Department will be putting on a production of The Pajama Game, a musical based on the novel 7-1/2 Cents by Richard Bissell.  Performances will take place in the DeBruhl Theatre at NBHS (890 Clark’s Chapel Road Map).  There will be 7 p.m. performances on March 26, 27, and 28, and a 2 p.m. performance on Sunday, March 29.  Tickets will be available at the door, $6 for students and $8 for adults, or you can purchase them in advance (before March 25) for $5. All seating is general admission.  For further information or to reserve advance tickets call Mr. Webb at 828-645-4221 ext. 200.

If you would like a chance to win free tickets to the show, I have a pair to give away courtesy of Brown’s Floral Design.  These tickets are good for any performance.  For your chance to win, click the Comment link below and leave any comment.  Entries will be accepted until midnight ET Tuesday, March 24.  A winner will be randomly chosen and notified on Wednesday, March 25.

Here’s more about the production:

The Story of The Pajama Game takes place around a small mid-west town in 1954. A strike is imminent at the Sleep-Tite Pajama Factory. The Union is seeking a wage raise of seven and a half cents an hour. Sid and Babe are in opposite camps yet a romance is born between them. Many famous ballads and dance numbers, such as “Hey There” and “Hernando’s Hideaway” bring back memories as we watch the factory workers play around at a picnic, in a nightclub and even stop the show with Bob Fosses’ unforgettable dance, “Steam Heat”. Hines, the popular efficiency expert, is in love with Gladys the President’s secretary. Periodically, he brings a more optimistic outlook to the life of the factory, when he is not becoming too jealous of Gladys and throwing knives. The plot develops with Sid trying to find a way to get his boss, Hasler’s, consent to a pay raise for the workers. Come out to see this two-time Tony award winning musical, The Pajama Game, and find out if Babe, Sid, Gladys, Hines, Prez, Mabel and Hasler can “sew back together” the situations that make up this musical comedy, The Pajama Game.

Dali Decals Hello Weaverville Contest

Published March 11th, 2009

Dali Decals is an online business newly based here in Weaverville.  Owners David and Alicia (they combined their names to come up with their business name) relocated to Weaverville in January, and they create and produce these decals in their studio.  No small task when what they’re creating includes large-scale decals for walls such as the one pictured above.

As a way of introducing themselves to their new hometown they have offered a $100 Dali Decals gift certificate for me to give away to one lucky winner this month.  It can be used on any order from their website, and with the majority of their products priced under $100 it’s a pretty nice prize (I’d like to win it, but of course I’m not eligible).

To enter this contest, click the Comment link and leave a comment below (you don’t need to register to do so).  Doesn’t matter what you say, so long as you abide by the Comment Policy.   You can welcome them to the community, say thanks for the contest, or simply write ‘enter’.  A winner will be randomly chosen from all the comments received by midnight ET on March 31, 2009.

Presidential Pizza Contest Winner

Published November 6th, 2008

Blue Mountain Pizza manager Michael Vanhoose today presented a $1000 check to Manna Food Bank’s Josh Stack. The donation was the end result of Blue Mountain Pizza’s “Presidential Pizza” contest, which the Obama pizza won 155-44. Blue Mountain had chosen Manna Food Bank to be the donation recipient if the Obama pizza won. Had the McCain pizza won, Blue Mountain would have donated $1000 to the USO.

WLOS was also on hand for the check presentation. I didn’t catch which newscast would include the story, but I’ll include a video link here should they make it available on their website (they usually do).

On the Verge New Artist Competition

Published November 5th, 2008

Weaverville undiscovered artists — looking for your big break?  WNC magazine and the Asheville Area Arts Council are in search of new or undiscovered artists in the Western North Carolina area.  The “On the Verge” competition is going on now, with submissions accepted through December 1.  Contest information is available at www.wncmagazine.com/ontheverge.html.  Here’s the press release:

WNC magazine and the Asheville Area Arts Council have joined to host the first-ever “On the Verge” competition, looking for new or undiscovered talent across the 23 counties of Western North Carolina. Artists of all media types are welcome to submit their works — from painters and potters to glassblowers and blacksmiths. “Western North Carolina is full of talented practitioners in nearly every medium — the only downside in having such a rich and deep pool of talent is that sometimes it is difficult for new artists to make their mark,” says WNC magazine editor Eric Seeger, “We aim to change that with ‘On the Verge.’”

Applicants can find more information, including eligibility criteria and entry guidelines, on WNC magazine’s website (www.wncmagazine.com). The competition is open to all artists who have yet to have a solo exhibit and have resided in WNC magazine’s coverage area for at least one year. Winners will be selected by a curator and panel of judges tapped from the regional arts community.

A month-long gallery exhibit will feature the winning works, and finalists will be featured in the May 2009 issue of WNC magazine. A percentage of sales will benefit the Asheville Area Arts Council, a non profit organization dedicated to educating the community about art and supporting local artists and organizations. The artists will also be awarded an exclusive consultation with Wendy H. Outland of “Who Knows Art” (www.whoknowsart.biz). They will receive contact and resource information and learn first-hand from this arts administration expert how to further their craft.

Submissions are accepted now through December 1, 2008. All pertinent information can be found on www.wncmagazine.com.

Last Chance to Enter the 2008 MyWeaverville Anniversary Contest

Published July 30th, 2008

Tomorrow is the last day you can enter the July Anniversary Contest. You have until midnight ET to enter, and by Noon on Friday, August 1, you’ll know if you’re one of our two big winners. If you’re interested, here’s how the contest winners will be chosen:

When you submit a contest entry, your Name and e-mail address are sent to me via email. All entries are marked “contest”, automatically assigned a number based on the order they were received (the first person to enter is number 1, the second person is number 2, third person number 3, etc.) and stored in a separate contest entries folder.

On August 1, a little before Noon, I will use the Random.org Integer generator to select two numbers. Once I have them, I match those numbers with the corresponding e-mail entry numbers, and I’ll have the winners. Check back here at Noon that day to see if you’re one of them. You will also be e-mailed directly for confirmation and so we can make arrangements for you to pick up your prizes. Once both sets of prizes have been given away, all other July contest entries will be deleted and the process will start all over again with the August contest (though with a smaller prize list).

Again, good luck to everyone who’s entered, or is about to enter. Rules, details, and entry form are here.
