Celebrity Golf Tournament July 26

The Weaverville Professional Firefighters Association will be holding a celebrity golf tournament on Monday, July 26, 2010 at the Reems Creek Golf Club, proceeded by a meet and greet reception on Sunday, July 25, 2010 at the Fireplace Restaurant (287 Weaverville Road in Woodfin). Each team that enters will be paired with a current or former professional athlete for their round of golf. All proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Mountain Area Red Cross and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Third Thursday at Blue Mountain July 15
Blue Mountain Pizza (55 North Main Street) continues its monthly Third Thursday fundraiser tomorrow (Thursday, July 15, 2010). For both July and August this fundraiser will benefit the Weaverville Senior Meal Center. Blue Mountain will donate 10% of Third Thursday sales and match 100% of donations made via their cash donation box (next to the cash register) during the next two months.
Ken & Tammy at Bojangles
Ken and Tammy, morning hosts of Mix 96.5, will be working the Weaverville Bojangles drive-thru and dining room 11 a.m.-1 p.m. today to help raise money for Caring for Children. 17th Annual Firecracker 5K Race July 3

Weaverville Milling Celebrates 100 Years June 12

Weaverville UMC Yard Sale June 12; Vendor Spaces Available
The Weaverville United Methodist Church Missions Committee is having a yard sale on Saturday, June 12, 2010, rain or shine. We have had so much interest from bands that we now have two stages this year! Yo Mamma’s Big Fat Booty Band headlines and Afromotive, BAYUKA (Rasta man Jacob Marley’s Band!), Traveling Bonfires, Galen Kipar, Chris O’Neill, Jay Sanders, Red Hot Sugar Babies, Richard Schulman and many others are also on the bill. Lyric poets Pasckie Pascua, Roberto Hess and many others will read and hold a Poetic SLAM. There will be a Story Telling Competition, Asheville International Children’s Film Festival will have an exhibition, “A Taste of PUSH Asheville Fashion Runway Show” will be held on stage three!, Sports & Movement Demonstrations will be ongoing throughout the day, 3 Color Guards will present, and Allyson MacCauley will sing the National Anthem to Asheville’s Fireworks ~ Yes! Asheville’s Fireworks! We discovered last year that the venue has perfect view of Asheville’s display of fireworks! Thus, folks can see Asheville’s fireworks with no traffic hassle, tons of free parking and WAY better music!, etc. etc.
We are encouraging folks to bring a blanket and stay for the day. Other musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments and set up under the trees around the park and play and jam.
Several fine artists have already secured booth space. A couple of food vendors are already on the bill. We have a few booth spaces left open for vendors at $50 for a 10×10 space. As most of you are already aware every month we select a local charity and raise money during the month to support their work. This means matching 100% of the money donated in our cash box next to the register and holding a fundraiser every Third Thursday when we donate 10% of our revenue to this monthly cause. For the month of May we are slightly stepping out of the box and selecting a national organization: The Wounded Warrior Project.All month we will be collecting and matching your cash donations plus over the four day Memorial Day Weekend we will be donating 10% of our revenue to this worthwhile cause.
The Wounded Warrior Project does not look at the political questions of war but focuses on the men and women who come home in need of care. We encourage you to check them out.

Swinging for Cancer

North Buncombe High School students Kady and Maddie are at the Weaverville McDonald’s today (Saturday, May 1) doing a “swing-a-thon” as a civics project. They were just setting up the playground swing when I drove by this morning, but I’m told they’ll be swinging for 24 hours, from 9 a.m. Saturday until 9 a.m. Sunday, to raise money for pancreatic cancer research. Stop by to cheer them on and donate if you can. All proceeds go to the Lustgarten Foundation.
Dining Out for Life April 29
Tomorrow (Thursday, April 29, 2010) is the 8th annual Dining Out for Life event in Western North Carolina. Participating restaurants donate 20% of the proceeds from the day to the Western North Carolina AIDS Project (WNCAP), to help them “continue with their mission of HIV/AIDS education & outreach throughout Western North Carolina and case management services to those living with the disease”.
Weaverville restaurants participating this year are:

NBHS Odyssey of the Mind Fundraiser
North Buncombe High School’s Odyssey of the Mind Team has qualified for the Odyssey of the Mind 2010 World Finals. This year the competition takes place at Michigan State University May 26-29, 2010, and the team is requesting donations to help fund their trip. More info from team coach Carla Mitchell:
Our Odyssey of the Mind team is requesting donations to help fund our trip to compete in the World Finals May 26-29 at Michigan State University. For your donation, you will receive an invitation to a fabulous thank-you dinner hosted by Sunnyside Café. Jazz Band Performance, Dinner April 17
The North Buncombe High School Jazz Band and Winterguard, and the Western Carolina University Drum Line and Winterguard will perform an exhibition at North Buncombe High School (890 Clark’s Chapel Road) this Saturday, April 17, 2010:
The North Buncombe High School Jazz Band and the Winterguard will be performing in exhibition on April 17, 2010 at North Buncombe High School. There will be a special performance of the Western Carolina University Purple Thunder, their indoor Drum Line and Winterguard. A BBQ meal will be served prior to the performance, consisting of a BBQ pork sandwich, choice of one (chips, potato salad or slaw), dessert and a drink for $7. They will start serving the meal at 6 p.m., followed by the performances. There is no charge for the exhibition; however, donations will be accepted. All proceeds from this event will benefit the North Buncombe High School Band.
