Chamber Music Instruction
Chamber music is the art of playing in a small ensemble of mixed instruments (duet, trio, quartet, etc.) with each player on their own unique, individual part. Playing chamber music is a wonderful way to hone all of your musical skills–rhythm, intonation, sight-reading, teamwork, and artistry–while meeting new friends and having a great time. We are looking for violinists, violists, and cellists of all ages and all levels from early intermediate to advanced to collaborate in a fun and challenging environment. We can place you in a group or accommodate a group you already have in mind.

Appalachian Music Classes
Have you been playing for a couple of years but don’t have a lot of experience jamming? Bring your songs and instruments and join Natalya Weinstein and other intermediate players to learn how to play in a bluegrass/old-time band setting. We will discuss the roles of the different instruments and work on rhythm, singing, backup and lead playing. Class is open to anyone with a few years experience on their instrument and basic chord knowledge. Recommended for ages 10 and up.
Classes will be on the 1st and 3rd Monday of each month from 6-7 p.m.
Cost is $10 per class*, no pre-registration required.
*Family discount – $10 for first person, $5 for each additional family member

Drama – Creating a Character: Homeschool Outreach Program
Through a series of theatre games and exercises, students will learn the basics of building a character from the bottom up. This 10 session course will culminate in the performance of student-developed scenes involving characters created in class. Give your homeschooler group the opportunity to exercise their imaginative muscle, expand their sense of creativity and engage in theatrical play!
Class Details: Classes are available in Asheville, Weaverville and Marshall. The material can be geared toward and incorporate a variety of age groups. This 10-session course will begin the week of September 8 and finish the week of November 8.
Day/Time: available to teach Monday-Wednesday mornings 10-11:30 a.m.

Beginner Songwriting
Learn to express yourself through the art of Songwriting!
In this class, we will use examples our favorite songs to explore what makes certain songs great. Working alone and as a group, we will approach Songwriting first through activities such as writing new lyrics to established forms. We will discuss the musical fundamentals of songwriting including melody, chords, form, poetry, and emotional content, and students will be encouraged to present their original songs in the supportive environment of the class. There will be an optional opportunity for public performance of original songs, too. This class is for anyone who has an interest in Songwriting. It is suggested for ages 10 to adult.
Classes are on Tuesdays: September 7-November 30 from 7-8 p.m. (exclude November 23).

Kids’ Beginner Percussion Class and Jam
This fun class will explore one of the most fundamental elements of music – Rhythm! Using bells, shakers, rattles, drums, our bodies, and stuff from around the house, children will learn the basics of making exciting percussion music together. This class will focus on basic drumming technique and musical communication. We will learn several traditional rhythms from around the world, and each class will have a Jam where we’ll get to make up our own rhythms together. A collection of percussion instruments will be provided, and students are encouraged to bring whatever they can from home.
No experience necessary! This class is suggested for ages 6-13.
Classes are on Tuesdays: September 7-November 30 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. (exclude November 23)

Beginning Bluegrass/Old-Time/Folk Guitar
This is a beginning guitar class for folks interested in learning basic guitar chords, alternating bass notes, and backing up a lead instrument. This will be a great class for people interested in playing at acoustic jams or for those of you with children learning a lead instrument who you would like to back up on guitar. We will learn open guitar chords, discuss basic changes, and work on backing up a few well-known fiddle tunes.
Classes will be every other Thursday from 5:30-6:15 p.m. beginning September 9.
Cost is $80 for the semester (8 weeks, through Dec. 16). Pre-registration is required as we will be building on skills learned each week.

Summer Clogging Classes
These classes are a great way for all ages to learn basic footwork in both the traditional and precision clogging styles including traditional solo flatfoot freestyle dancing as well as several beginning step sequences from the more contemporary style. We will learn solo steps, partner turns and group movement patterns and figures. The students will learn to develop their own unique clogging style and how to be a good timekeeper. We will use clogging mixers, improvisation and rhythm games along with the footwork sequences and clogging line dance routines throughout the semester. This fun class is not to miss! MPAC July 4th Block Party
MPAC is again sponsoring a 4th of July Block Party at the soccer fields at North Buncombe High School. Here’s the release, “hot off the press”, with more details to come as we get closer to the celebration:

When: Sunday, July 4, 2010, Noon-10 p.m.This year’s MPAC’s 4th of July WNC Block Party is already even bigger than last year’s. We have had so much interest from bands that we now have two stages this year! Yo Mamma’s Big Fat Booty Band headlines and Afromotive, BAYUKA (Rasta man Jacob Marley’s Band!), Traveling Bonfires, Galen Kipar, Chris O’Neill, Jay Sanders, Red Hot Sugar Babies, Richard Schulman and many others are also on the bill. Lyric poets Pasckie Pascua, Roberto Hess and many others will read and hold a Poetic SLAM. There will be a Story Telling Competition, Asheville International Children’s Film Festival will have an exhibition, “A Taste of PUSH Asheville Fashion Runway Show” will be held on stage three!, Sports & Movement Demonstrations will be ongoing throughout the day, 3 Color Guards will present, and Allyson MacCauley will sing the National Anthem to Asheville’s Fireworks ~ Yes! Asheville’s Fireworks! We discovered last year that the venue has perfect view of Asheville’s display of fireworks! Thus, folks can see Asheville’s fireworks with no traffic hassle, tons of free parking and WAY better music!, etc. etc.
We are encouraging folks to bring a blanket and stay for the day. Other musicians are encouraged to bring their instruments and set up under the trees around the park and play and jam.
Several fine artists have already secured booth space. A couple of food vendors are already on the bill. We have a few booth spaces left open for vendors at $50 for a 10×10 space. Update: Joyful Noise Extends Deadline for Summer Camp
Just received this updated release about Joyful Noise Community Music and Arts Center’s 2010 Summer Camp. The original deadline to apply without a late fee was Saturday, May 15, but they’ve extended that deadline to the end of the month – May 31.
Joyful Noise Community Music & Arts Center, located in the First Presbyterian Church in Weaverville, is pleased to announce its second exciting summer of Music & Arts Camp.
Joyful Noise Summer Music & Arts Camp is a fantastic opportunity for string players of all ages and skill levels, from early intermediate to advanced, grades 1 thru 12 (and adults as well). This eclectic string camp will offer orchestra, bluegrass, chamber music, and masterclass instruction, as well as a variety of electives such as world music & jazz, percussive dance sampler, visual arts sampler, and drama workshop. At the end of the week, students will have the opportunity to perform with their ensembles at the Camp Showcase concert. Artist-faculty include Asheville Symphony members Gina Caldwell, Frances Duff, Franklin, Keel and Kara Poorbaugh, as well as orchestra director Dean Angeles, a nationally renowned string educator and conductor.
These quality programs offer area students the opportunity to explore new genres of artistic expression and to become more proficient in their performance techniques under the direction of nurturing master instructors.

The North Buncombe High School Jazz Band and Winterguard, and the Western Carolina University Drum Line and Winterguard will perform an exhibition at North Buncombe High School (890 Clark’s Chapel Road) this Saturday, April 17, 2010:
The North Buncombe High School Jazz Band and the Winterguard will be performing in exhibition on April 17, 2010 at North Buncombe High School. There will be a special performance of the Western Carolina University Purple Thunder, their indoor Drum Line and Winterguard. A BBQ meal will be served prior to the performance, consisting of a BBQ pork sandwich, choice of one (chips, potato salad or slaw), dessert and a drink for $7. They will start serving the meal at 6 p.m., followed by the performances. There is no charge for the exhibition; however, donations will be accepted. All proceeds from this event will benefit the North Buncombe High School Band.

The Brio Concert Series presents I Dreamt of Love concert on Sunday, April 11, 2010 at 4:00pm held at the First Presbyterian Church (30 Alabama Avenue).
