An Evening of Music Benefit April 9

“An Evening of Music” benefit concert for the North Buncombe Music Scholarship has been rescheduled for Friday, April 9, 2010, 7 .p.m. at the First Baptist Church (63 North Main Street).  Guitar, vocal, piano and accordion selections will be presented by Pastor Jim McCoy, Rev. Wendell Brittain and  Pastor Hank Jackson with additional guest performances by previous scholarship winners. Free will offering. Land of the Sky Symphonic Band Concert Feb. 28

I hear we have at least one Weaverville resident who is a member of the Land of the Sky Symphonic Band. They will be performing Sunday night at Diana Wortham Theatre (2 South Pack Square, Asheville).  Here’s the details about that show:

The LAND OF THE SKY SYMPHONIC BAND will present a concert at the Diana Wortham Theatre on Sunday, February 28, 2010 at 7 p.m.  Tickets are $10.  The band is under the direction of Jamie Hafner, Director Emeritus of Education at the Brevard Music Center and Director Emeritus of Bands at the University of Toledo. Mr. Hafner also currently serves as conductor of the Brevard Community Band.  Soloists will include Leonard Lopatin, respected flutist and flute-maker, and currently second flute with the Asheville Symphony and principal flute with the Land of the Sky Symphonic Band; Dr. Will Peebles, Professor, Director of the School of Music, Western Carolina University (Bassoon); and Dr. Michael Schallock, Associate Professor, School of Music, Western Carolina University, (Tuba).  Proceeds will benefit the band.  For additional information, call 645-2367 or e-mail libby.wilfong@gmail.com.

The Land of the Sky Symphonic Band, formed in 1990 by two Enka High School Alumni, Rene Simson and Bob Lee, presents traditional concert band music.  The love of music led them to create an opportunity for adults to continue to play and perform.  Members live in Buncombe and surrounding counties, and include professional and amateur musicians of all ages and walks of life.

The Brio Concert Series presents “An Afternoon of Chamber Music” concert on Sunday, February 21, 2010 at 4 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church (30 Alabama Avenue). The concert will feature Jane McCoy, Soprano; Teresa Sumpter, Piano; Cynthia Roop, Flute. Selections will include music by Rachmaninoff, Foss, Scarlatti, Cowell, Faure and Michael Head.  The public is invited to attend this free series. A suggested donation of $10 is welcomed. “Chicago” Feb. 18-21

While the snow and cold have kept students out of classes, those in North Buncombe High School’s drama department have been faithfully holding play practice this winter in preparation for their performance of the musical “Chicago“.  It’s happening this weekend, with show times at 7 p.m. on February 18, 19, and 20, 2010, and 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 21.  Tickets are $8 for students or seniors and $10 for adults.  All performances will be held at the Debruhl Theatre at North Buncombe High School (890 Clark’s Chapel Road).

All County Band Concert Postponed (to March 2)

The All-County Band Clinic Concert originally scheduled for tonight has been postponed to Tuesday, March 2, 2010 due to the weather.  It will still be held at North Buncombe High School (890 Clark’s Chapel Road). Here’s the updated information:

Students are tuning their instruments and gearing up for the annual Buncombe County Schools All County Band Clinic being held March 1-2, 2010 at North Buncombe High School. The clinic will feature approximately 200 middle and high school students, grades 7-12.

Guest conductors for the event are: Michael Robinson, Director of Bands at Mars Hill College, Mars Hill, NC, who will conduct the high school band; and Arris A. Golden, Director of Bands at Gravelly Hill Middle School, Efland, NC, who will conduct the middle school band.  Musical selections for the clinic include works by Saucedo, Ticheli, Reinke and Curnow.

The middle and high school bands will perform in concert on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Debruhl Theatre at North Buncombe High School. The concert is free and open to the public.

Update: Due to the inclement weather the clinic has been rescheduled for March 1-2. The public concert will be held March 2 at 7 p.m.

Cellist Marie D’Andrea Music Program Nov. 20

The Weaverville Music Study Club presents a free program by Marie D’Andrea, cellist on Friday, November 20, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Weaverville First Baptist Church (63 North Main Street). Ms. D’Andrea has a Bachelor of Music from UNC-Chapel Hill and a Master of Music from the University of Connecticut, both with an emphasis in cello performance. She performs with the Hendersonville SymphonyJohnson City Symphony Orchestras, and Brevard Philharmonic Orchestra. D’Andrea currently resides in the Asheville area where she teaches lessons and classes at her own private studio. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy her performance.

Joyful Noise Community Music and Arts Center will hold their Fall Recital on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at the First Presbyterian Church (30 Alabama Avenue).  Info from the Joyful Noise e-newsletter:

Our Fall Recital is coming up on Sunday, November 8, 2009, at the First Presbyterian Church of Weaverville.  I hope you all can attend!  There will be two instrumental recitals taking place in the Sanctuary, one at 3 p.m. and one at 4:30 p.m. In between, kind members of the First Presbyterian will once again be providing a reception in the Fellowship Hall.  During this time (4 p.m.) students of the Dance program will perform for us. Come out and support the students of Joyful Noise!
