Profile: McLendon Bylines
Here’s another Weaverville-owned and operated business: McLendon Bylines, a freelance journalism and PR service. I asked writer Sherri McLendon, the woman behind the bylines, to put together her own press release about herself and her business. Here’s what she had to say:
Sherri L. McLendon communicates with McLendon Bylines
A stroll down “Memory Lane” in Sherri L. McLendon’s neighborhood may find her greeting corporate executives in full costume and in character to enliven a high-profile merger celebration, interviewing the Indigo Girls about an artistic collaboration, covering a high profile serial killer trial, creating cross-branding opportunities using themed entertainment, or promoting an individual or cause through ethical public relations practice.Behind each of these personas one finds a committed, enthusiastic communication strategist, writer, and editor. Working as a public relations and marketing professional since 1999, Ms. McLendon currently operates McLendon Bylines, an independent freelance copywriting and editing service for journalism, marketing and public relations projects, publications and events.

Opening in March: Appalachian Animal Hospital

A note from Dr. Ann Stuart, one of the three veterinarians who will be opening Appalachian Animal Hospital in downtown Weaverville this March:
Appalachian Animal Hospital will be opening a new office in downtown Weaverville! Plans for an opening date of March 1 are under way and the staff is working hard toward that goal. The new office is located at 68 North Main Street in downtown Weaverville between the Home Trust Bank and If It’s Special.
Formerly known as Appalachian Equine, Appalachian Animal Hospital will be caring for small animal patients in the new facility while continuing to provide ambulatory services. For a combined total of almost 30 years in practice Dr. Ann Stuart, Dr. Ted Wright and Dr. Karen Reynolds have been offering farm calls for horses, llamas, sheep and goats as well as housecalls for pets. Since the practice has already been providing preventive health care services for dogs and cats at home for many years, Appalachian Animal Hospital is excited to be able to offer full service care for any patients that are best cared for in a hospital situation. The Doctors and Staff are looking forward to having the opportunity to offer your animal family members comprehensive, compassionate care in a comfortable, homelike environment.
Contact Appalachian Animal Hospital at 658-8989 – the phone is already being forwarded to our current office.
New Business: Big Reveal Organizing

If getting organized is one of your 2010 New Year’s resolutions, Weaverville resident Marla Cassida might be just the person to help. She sent me this information about her new business, Big Reveal Organizing:
My name is Marla Cassida, and I am a Weaverville resident. I just wanted to let you know about the new business I have opened here in Weaverville. Big Reveal Organizing offers professional organizing services at reasonable rates to residents of Weaverville and surrounding areas. We believe that your home should be a sanctuary, not a source of stress. We can help organize kitchens and pantries, bedrooms, closets, children’s rooms, basements, garages, home offices, craft rooms, studios, you name it. We can also assist with downsizing, moving, estate clearing and other projects.
Many people start out their New Year making resolutions to “get organized”. We can help our clients keep those resolutions. Contacting a professional organizer is a big step for most people. The very thought of allowing someone in to your home to see all your clutter is more than many people can handle. But the ultimate benefits are so worthwhile. I’ve worked with people with chronic disorganization issues, adults with ADD, and those that are just too busy to deal with organizing. I love working with people and helping them reveal the organized spaces in their homes.
For more information, our phone number is (828) 280-2101 and our website is www.bigrevealorganizing.com
New Classes at Weaverville Yoga
from Barbara at Weaverville Yoga (One Florida Avenue):
New classes at Weaverville Yoga
Flexible Stretching for the Inflexible Guy. Tuesday 4:30 p.m./Saturday 10:30 a.m. Taught by fellow Guy, Greg Zocher. Geared for men who know they’ve gotten rusty but really don’t want to step into a class with nimble girls in leotards who can wrap their ankles behind their ears. This is the perfect way for guys to stake a claim on strength, better health, and, as the title says, flexibility. It’s a winner.
Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8:30 a.m., Saraswati Tiberi teaches a gentle, genuine Hatha yoga class for new or returning yoga students or for those who know gentle is smart and effective with the body. Sunday mornings at 10, Saraswati teaches a high energy, deep reaching Hatha Vinyasa – also a new class. Saraswati has just come back after advanced studies in Chinese medicine in China. She’s a great and very perceptive teacher.
Weaverville’s own Diane Saccone will begin teaching a Wednesday morning class at 8:30 a.m. called Moving Toward Recovery. Diane has a long experience teaching yoga and blends her rich background in yoga with her practical training in the medical field (she is with the Red Cross) to focus on yoga for rebuilding strength and good health after injury, illness, or disuse. This approach can be the foundation for a healthy body and a better life.

[Note and full disclosure: I'm actually doing work for their office, so if you're looking for me that's a good place to start. I have a desk set up just inside the back entrance. ]
Re-opened: Main Street Flooring & Renovation
Main Street Flooring & Renovation recently re-opened in their new location at 2 Monticello Village Drive. That’s the Monticello Village development next to the Post Office, and they’re located on the back side of the building. They’re carrying all the products they had at the old location (natural stone, ceramic, hardwood, laminate, carpet, vinyl, and DuraCeramic), and their phone number is still the same too, (828) 645-1031.
Opening Wednesday: ABC Store
The Weaverville ABC liquor store opens its doors tomorrow (October 21, 2009) at 9 a.m. The store is located in the Northridge Commons development and will be open 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Featured in the store, besides the usual assortment of alcohol, is a mural painted by Asheville artist Gail Smith, complete with the Weaverville clock set at 5 p.m. Voters approved bringing the store to Weaverville in 2007.
Got Firewood?
Got a call from Weaverville native Dan Eller reminding me it’s that time of year again – for firewood. If you need some, here’s a little info about his business, Asheville Firewood LLC, taken from their Facebook page:
Since 2006 Asheville Firewood LLC has delivered quality seasoned firewood in Asheville and surrounding area to residents and businesses. Our hardwood is cut to standard lengths of 15 and 18 inch or we will cut to special order. Hickory and cherry wood is available for your BBQ cooking. Standard order is 3/4 cord truck load of firewood, but we will deliver any amount to suite the customer needs.
Dan Eller, owner, has lived on Britain Mountain in the Beech Community off Reems Creek Road for 26 years and is a native of Weaverville. After cutting and splitting firewood for his personal use for years, Dan saw the need for a firewood business in the Asheville area. He attended classes at Mountain BizWorks and established Asheville Firewood LLC.
Call Dan at (828) 779-7397 for more information, pricing, or to schedule delivery.

Tea is launching in-home Trunk Shows to showcase its collections to parents in an intimate setting. Tea Stylists will be organizing the Trunk Shows in conjunction with Trunk Show Coordinators. Hospitality and community are very important to the Tea Trunk Show. You will coordinate the logistics with your Tea stylist to ensure a special and well-attended event. You will need an invitation list that ensures that 8-10 guests attend. The Trunk Show will last approximately two hours for the presentation and personal shopping. We ask that the atmosphere, refreshments, and other amenities create a warm, mindful, and inspired experience for everyone.
At the Trunk Show, you and your guests will receive personal wardrobe assistance and expert tips on how to recreate Tea’s unique looks and layering style. This video shows their latest back to school collection, “Indigo Arts” (don’t blink – it goes by fast):
Need a Clown?

Scribbles the Clown, aka Donna in Weaverville, is available for parties or special events. According to her flyer, Scribbles “loves to facepaint, make balloon animals, dance, and play games.” If you need more information, you can reach her at (828) 645-3528, (561) 866-2280 or Scribbles can also be found doing face painting most Wednesdays at the Weaverville Tailgate Market.
Opening Wednesday: Walmart
The day some have anxiously awaited and others have dreaded arrives Wednesday when Walmart opens its doors in Northridge Commons. The public is invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:30 a.m., and customers can start shopping at 8 a.m. The day will feature appearances by Rick the Robot, vendor demonstrations, food samples, and all kinds of specials throughout the store. They’ll also have more demonstrations and samples this weekend. Store hours are endless – they’re open 24/7 364 days a year (closed only on Christmas). The store also includes a SmartStyle Family Hair Salon, Subway, and a branch of Woodforest National Bank. The store number is 4334 and their phone number is 645-5028.
I had the chance last night to see the new store, and it’s a drastic change from the old model. The new design features wider aisles, brighter colors, lower shelving, and a new layout. Their press release also touts the environmentally friendly features, including low-flow toilets and faucets, LED lighting throughout the store, and the use of recycled materials in the store’s concrete floors. They have also awarded grants to 5 local organizations – $2500 each to the Weaverville Fire Department, Weaverville Police Department, Hospice of Madison County, and North Buncombe High School, and $3000 to the Weaverville Senior Meal Center.
Tar Heels Rockers
For the Tar Heel fans, Shope’s Furniture (31 North Main Street
) has these solid hardwood Carolina rocking chairs in stock. They’re made by Hinkle Chair Company and Shope’s has them on sale for $198. If you’re not a Tar Heels fan, I believe they can special order other schools.
Now Open: Aabani Salon & Spa
They don’t have a sign up yet, but Aabani Salon & Spa is officially open at 12 North Main Street. The salon carries Aveda products for skin and hair and offers all the usual hairstylist services. They also offer brow wax and facials, and are setting up an area for manicures and pedicures. Hours are 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday. Their phone number is 484-8488.
Meet Chris
An overdue introduction, this is Chris LaFond. Chris took over as the new manager at Blue Mountain Pizza (55 North Main Street
) after Rose left to pursue other opportunities. He and his family came to Weaverville via Montana over two years ago. If you haven’t met him already, be sure to say hello the next time you stop in.
Also at Blue Mountain: they’re still offering the Family Dinner Special every Thursday. The special includes a house salad, spaghetti and meatballs, garlic knots, and a fountain drink. It’s $19.95 for a family of four and $11.95 for two (and that’s the total, not the per person price).
Now Open: Game Rage 2
Game Rage 2 opened its doors last week in the center off Garrison Branch Road (on the corner of 25/70 and Monticello Road, next to Weaverville Pet Pantry
). They buy, sell, and trade video games, game consoles, and DVDs, and they say what sets them apart from other stores is they have, and can repair, any games or consoles from Atari on up. They also have a “Pay to Play” room with X-Box 360s (cost to play is $5/hour). Game Rage 2 is open 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Saturday and Noon-4 p.m. on Sundays. Their phone number is 484-8158.
New Hours, Menu at Sunnyside Cafe
Sunnyside Cafe (18 North Main Street
) has a new menu and is open new hours. They’ve added some items to their lunch menu and will be offering lighter fare for dinner (similar to their lunch menu with some nightly specials thrown in). New hours are Monday-Saturday for lunch, 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., and Tuesday-Saturday for dinner, 5:30-9 p.m.
Ingles Grand (Remodeled) Opening May 30
The Grand Opening for Ingles (140 Weaver Blvd.
) is scheduled for Saturday, May 30. I don’t have exact details about what will be happening, but I’m told Grand Opening days typically feature food samples, special deals, and sales.
If you’re like me, you’re probably still trying to find where some items have moved to in the new store. I saw today they have a Store Directory available at the office. Scanned a copy which you can download here (pdf format, 287kb). Hope it helps!
Opening Tomorrow: Lowe’s
Lowe’s opens its doors to the public tomorrow at 6 a.m. Regular store hours will be Monday-Saturday, 6 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sunday, 8 a.m.-8 p.m. I don’t have a copy of the store layout map yet, but it’s similar to the South Asheville store. Their phone number is 782-9020.
Some events coming up next week:
Wednesday, May 27: Community Preview Night. From 4-8 p.m. they’ll be giving away gift bags with 6-in-1 Kobalt screwdrivers, Lowe’s key chains, magnets, pen holders, and notepads.
Thursday, May 28: Official Grand Opening. Gift Card Match Day — Buy a gift card, and Lowe’s will match your purchase with a donation to the Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity, up to $5,000.
Saturday, May 30: Free Build a Birdhouse kids’ clinic at 10 a.m.
