NBHS’ Aldridge appointed NCCAT Trustee

Published July 12th, 2010

Congratulations to North Buncombe High School English teacher Deborah Aldridge, who was recently appointed to the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching Board of Trustees by Governor Perdue. Release from the NCCAT website:

Governor Appoints New NCCAT Trustees

Governor Beverly Perdue has appointed Deborah Aldridge of Old Fort, Gregory West of Fayetteville, and Jackie Wooten of Bethel to the Board of Trustees of the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching (NCCAT).

Aldridge, an English teacher at North Buncombe High School in Weaverville, will represent Region 8. She is also an NCCAT alumna. “As a teacher I have been invigorated by attending professional development programs at NCCAT,” Aldridge said. “As a trustee, I hope to encourage NCCAT as it continues its work of re-energizing the deserving and dedicated teachers of North Carolina.”

Retired from Pitt County Schools after more than 40 years in the classroom and an NCCAT alumna as well, Wooten represents Region 1. “I am thrilled to be working to ensure that the unparalleled professional development opportunities provided by NCCAT are there for all North Carolina teachers,” said Wooten of her appointment.

Filling the unexpired term of Gene McLaurin for Region 4, West is chief of staff of H&H Homes in Fayetteville. He is also past chair of the Cumberland County Board of Education and continues to serve the board at large. “NCCAT is one of our greatest educational assets,” West said. “We need to continue to elevate the profession of teaching and keep great teachers in the classroom, directly impacting our students. I look forward to helping NCCAT build and sustain great teaching throughout North Carolina.”

In addition to these appointments, Guy Smith of Lexington was reappointed to the NCCAT board to represent Region 5. A representative from Region 6 has yet to be selected.

“Each of these individuals brings to our board a proven record of dedication to quality public education in North Carolina,” said Dr. Mary McDuffie, executive director of NCCAT. “We welcome them and look forward to benefiting from their knowledge, skills and experience as we move NCCAT forward in providing professional development opportunities that result in a corps of strong teachers and successful students across our state.”

With campuses in Cullowhee and Ocracoke, NCCAT positively impacts public education by providing extraordinary professional development for North Carolina teachers throughout their careers. NCCAT’s instructional programming is designed to give both beginning and experienced teachers the support and resources they need to be highly effective and enhance student achievement. NCCAT conducts interdisciplinary, content-specific, residential seminars for pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers in the environmental and biological sciences, arts, humanities, mathematics, leadership and technology.

Published May 25th, 2010

North Buncombe High School’s Cody Geyer is one of 10 finalists for the 2010 North Carolina Spit Tobacco Education Program (STEP) “No Spit” Baseball All-Star of the Year.  This is the third year they’ve had the contest, and each finalist has signed the “No Spit” pledge not to use spit or smokeless tobacco on or off the field. Online voting began last week and will run through midnight on Sunday, May 30, 2010. The winner will be announced on Monday, May 31.

Vote online using this link and/or send an email with your vote to NCnoSpitAllStars@TheSportsFlash.com.  Only vote will be counted per IP address per 24 hours (I think – the time frame wasn’t very clear in the rules).  Results to date can found here.

About NC STEP…

“The North Carolina Spit Tobacco Education Program (NC STEP) assists the statewide tobacco prevention and control network in reducing spit-tobacco usage rates among North Carolina’s youth. The program provides consultation and information about spit tobacco; develops educational and school materials; provides training for the medical, dental, public health and school communities; and provides presentations to schools and youth groups.”

Spring Senior Grad Project Judges Needed May 27

Published April 26th, 2010

North Buncombe High School needs 120 volunteers to help judge Spring Senior Graduation Projects on Thursday, May 27, 2010. Info:

NBHS Parent Connection is now starting to recruit judges for NBHS Spring Graduation Projects.

What we need:
We need community members to come to NBHS on May 27, 2010 to judge our senior graduation projects. The projects will be presented from 6-8 p.m. that evening, with snacks 5:15-5:45 p.m., and judge orientation meeting from 5:45-6 p.m.

What is a graduation project?
All NBHS seniors complete a graduation project in order to graduate. They work on a project throughout the semester, conduct research in class, and present their work to a panel of judges at the end of the semester.

Judge responsibilities:
We need judges to evaluate how well the students do on their presentations. The students are to give an organized, polished speech, and the judges determine how well the student has done on his or her speech. Judges will evaluate the students’ speaking skills, the quality of their visual aides, and how much effort overall it seems the student put into his/her learning during the project.

What happens that night:
On the evening of presentations, judges will be assigned to a classroom. Before each presentation, judges will be given a copy of the student’s portfolio to look over. This helps the judge know what the student worked on for his or her project. Portfolios are graded by the teacher already and are given to judges as a guide to show what the student did for their project. Once the judges have looked quickly at the portfolio, the student enters the room and gives his/her speech. Judges will use the provided rubric to judge the presentation. After the presentation, judges fill in the rubric and write comments for the student. Judges will hear five or six presentations in one night.

If you confirm you wish to be a judge this spring, the rubric will be sent to you by email prior to the event.

Seeing these student projects is very exciting and can be extremely fun!

If you’d like to be a Graduation Project Judge, or have any further questions, please contact NBHS Parent Connection, Beth Fiore Kral at bethpt@mac.com, or at 645-0434.

Avatar’s NBHS Connection

Published December 27th, 2009

I went to see James Cameron’s new film “Avatar” yesterday, and yes, the special effects are every bit as amazing as they claim. Even cooler was learning they’re the work of North Buncombe High School graduate Rob Powers.  There are articles about him in this week’s Weaverville Tribune and today’s Citizen-Times. The bio on Power’s own website says this about the project.

In June 2005, Robert was asked by James Cameron to be the first 3D artist hired for the “Avatar” feature film project. Working closely with James Cameron and the core design team Robert provided 3D concept and motion studies of key character, creature, and environmental assets for the film. Later Robert’s role evolved and he created and supervised the first ever “Virtual Art Department” for the film.

As Supervisor of the Avatar Virtual Art Department he and his team developed all real-time environmental assets for the production, and developed numerous innovative “Virtual” workflow techniques and tools that defined the process. Robert continued his efforts as Virtual Art Department Supervisor on the Peter Jackson / Steven Spielberg animated feature film “TinTin” where he organized and built a team in Los Angeles and worked in New Zealand with the Weta Digital Team.

Cool stuff.  Good job, Rob.
