Runners Wanted: NBMS PTO Tech Run Sept. 11

The 3rd Annual North Buncombe Middle School 5k Tech Run is looking for runners:

On September 11, 2010 the North Buncombe Middle School PTO is having a 5k run and 1 mile fun run/walk at the North Buncombe High School Cross Country Trail.  This is a MAJOR fund-raiser for the North Buncombe Middle School and has been a lot of fun for the participants in the past.  Our biggest problem is we need MORE participants.  We have many great give-aways and awards, but we need more runners.  If you are a runner, please consider registering.  If you know anyone who may be interested, please spread the word.

This is a trail run and will be held on the North Buncombe High School Cross Country trail.

Fees
Early registration is $20 adults, $10 for children, with a family maximum of $50.  On-site registration on race day will be $25 for adults and $15 for children. Early registration closes Thursday, September 09, 2010 at 11 p.m.

Friday, September 10, 4-7 p.m. @ NBMS

Awards
5K awards will be presented to top male and female finishers in the following age groups: Elementary School (6-10), Middle School (11-13), High School (14-19), 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+.

All County Band Performance Clinic Feb. 2

Update: Due to the inclement weather the clinic has been rescheduled for March 1-2. The public concert will be held March 2 at 7 p.m.

Students are tuning their instruments and gearing up for the annual Buncombe County Schools All County Band Clinic being held February 1-2, 2010 at North Buncombe High School. The clinic will feature approximately 200 middle and high school students, grades 7-12.

Guest conductors for the event are: Michael Robinson, Director of Bands at Mars Hill College, Mars Hill, NC, who will conduct the high school band; and Arris A. Golden, Director of Bands at Gravelly Hill Middle School, Efland, NC, who will conduct the middle school band. Musical selections for the clinic include works by Saucedo, Ticheli, Reinke and Curnow.

The middle and high school bands will perform in concert on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 at 7 p.m. in the Debruhl Theatre at North Buncombe High School. The concert is free and open to the public.

The North Buncombe Middle School PTO is putting on the 2nd Annual Tech Run for Education on Saturday, October 24, 2009.  The fundraiser features a 5k Trail Run as well as a 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk. Here’s the info, including a link to the registration form:

Come out Saturday, October 24, for the 2nd Annual 5K Trail Run and 1 mile Run/Walk, sponsored by the North Buncombe Middle School PTO.  NBMS PTO is an organization of parents, teachers, and members of the North Buncombe community dedicated to enhancing the education of all students at NBMS.  In the past, money raised by the NBMS PTO has been used for Classroom Calculators, Auditorium Sound System, Field Trip Funding, Student planners, Teacher and Athletic Department supplements, and Academic Teams and Awards sponsorships.

COURSE
The 5K will follow the Cross Country trail at North Buncombe High School.  Race will be held rain or shine.

DIRECTIONS
Take US 19/23N / Future I-26W to Exit 17, Flat Creek.  Turn left at the light and go ¾ of a mile.  Bear left on Salem Hill Road.  Continue ½ mile and turn left into NBHS.

Hard to believe, but school starts back on August 25, 2009, less than a month from now. A full school calendar in printable format is available via the link below. Here’s a few notable dates (of course all are subject to change in the event of adverse weather):

Some of the recent North Buncombe and Weaverville school news and notes I’ve found out on the web:

North Buncombe High School students Emma Johnson and James MacDonald received Good Citizenship Awards from the Asheville Civitan Club this week.

North Buncombe High School’s Justin Min made it to the quarterfinals of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 3-A Tennis Championships. (The North Buncombe men’s tennis team also just finished their season with a 15-1 record, their lone loss against 2008 State Champion Charlotte Catholic.)

North Buncombe’s Sydney Revis had the best showing at the 2009 NCHSAA 3-A Track & Field Meet, taking third place in the Girl’s Shot Put. Other North Buncombe finishes:

  • Sage Profit finished 8th in the Girl’s Pole Vault.
  • The 4×800 Meter Girl’s Relay Team finished 7th. Team members were Justine Stocks, Jessa Vogel, Audrey Garrett, and Allison Fox.
  • The 4×400 Meter Girl’s Relay Team finished 4th. Team members were Justine Stocks, Jennifer Roberts, Allison Fox, and Madison Emery.
  • Alan Youngberg finished 5th in the Boy’s Discus Throw

North Buncombe Middle School student teams Kayla Metcalf & Robert Brailer, Lindsey King & Danielle Taylor, and Alex Destino & Travis Broadhurst took first, second, and third place respectively in the Spring 2009 Stock Market Game sponsored by the North Carolina Council on Economic Education (NCCEE).

Weaverville Primary first grader Francisco Diaz-Rodriguez was selected as the Shoney’s and Star 104.3 Star Kid of the Week.

Location Change for Relay for Life

The Weaverville Tribune blog is reporting a location change for tonight’s Relay for Life event.  Instead of taking place outdoors at North Buncombe Middle School, it will now be indoors at North Buncombe High School (890 Clark’s Chapel Road Map).  Teams can start setting up at 3:30 p.m. and the event begins at 6 p.m.  For more information visit the Weaverville Relay for Life website.

Proctors Needed May 19-21

North Buncombe Middle School (51 North Buncombe School Road Map) is in need of volunteers to help monitor students during testing.  Anyone over the age of 21 can proctor.  Info:

Proctors are needed in the classrooms of North Buncombe Middle School to help monitor the students while they are being tested.  No special training is required, ANYONE can help proctor!  You will need to be at the middle school no later than 7:45 a.m. each morning and stay until around lunchtime.  Can you PLEASE help? The days are May 19, 20 and 21. If you can help please call the North Buncombe Middle School at 645-7944 or Nancy Orench, Volunteer Coordinator at 683-6472.

NBMS Band Winter Concert Dec. 16

The North Buncombe Middle School Band will be performing Tuesday, December 16 at the school (51 North Buncombe School Road Map).  The Winter Concert will include the 7th and 8th grade bands as well as a Low brass guest group from Mars Hill College. It begins at 7 p.m., is open to the public, and is free for anyone who wants to attend.
