Open: Appalachian Animal Hospital
Dr. Stuart just let me know Appalachian Animal Hospital is now officially open at 68 North Main Street:
Appalachian Animal Hospital is now open for business. We are accepting new pet patients and would love for you to stop in for a visit to see our new hospital and meet the staff. Treats are always available for your animals if you bring them by on your walks in the neighborhood or rides in the car around town. We are conveniently located at 68 North Main Street in downtown Weaverville next to the Home Trust Bank and have a small parking lot behind the building where you’ll find our main entrance. You can also reach us at 658-8989.
Along with general preventive health care, medicine, surgery and dentistry we offer nutritional counseling, flea and tick control and special care for your aging pets. We are also excited to offer veterinary chiropractic care for your pets. Did you know that chiropractic, or “spinal manipulative therapy”, can be helpful in many cases for treating conditions related to orthopedic problems that can cause lameness and back pain as well as systemic problems like GI upsets and dermatitis with less use of medications?
Drs Ann Stuart, Ted Wright, Karen Reynolds and Margie Moncure have combined experience of more than 40 years in Veterinary Medicine while working in the local area. Since we have always offered housecalls for small animals in the field while we were driving around visiting farms, we are now looking forward to providing complete care in our new clinic. So, stop in and see us! We look forward to helping you keep your pets healthy, fit and happy.

Opening in March: Appalachian Animal Hospital

A note from Dr. Ann Stuart, one of the three veterinarians who will be opening Appalachian Animal Hospital in downtown Weaverville this March:
Appalachian Animal Hospital will be opening a new office in downtown Weaverville! Plans for an opening date of March 1 are under way and the staff is working hard toward that goal. The new office is located at 68 North Main Street in downtown Weaverville between the Home Trust Bank and If It’s Special.
Formerly known as Appalachian Equine, Appalachian Animal Hospital will be caring for small animal patients in the new facility while continuing to provide ambulatory services. For a combined total of almost 30 years in practice Dr. Ann Stuart, Dr. Ted Wright and Dr. Karen Reynolds have been offering farm calls for horses, llamas, sheep and goats as well as housecalls for pets. Since the practice has already been providing preventive health care services for dogs and cats at home for many years, Appalachian Animal Hospital is excited to be able to offer full service care for any patients that are best cared for in a hospital situation. The Doctors and Staff are looking forward to having the opportunity to offer your animal family members comprehensive, compassionate care in a comfortable, homelike environment.

Three Weaverville residents, David Brank, Jeremy Johnson and Renee Garcia, will be showing their registered French Alpine Goats at the WNC Ag Center (1301 Fanning Bridge Road, Fletcher
) this weekend (Saturday, June 20-Sunday, June 21) at the “Summer in the Mountains” Dairy Goat Show. The show runs from 9 a.m. -5 p.m. each day and admission is free, so check them out and cheer them on if you have a chance. Here’s some more details about the show:
About the Show
The “Summer in the Mountains” Dairy Goat Show offers an excellent educational opportunity for families and young people interested in learning more about the Dairy Goat. The show will run from Saturday, June 20-Sunday, June 21, 9 a.m. until about 5 p.m. each day. It will be held at the WNC Agricultural Center Sale barn and will feature classes for the six recognized dairy goat breeds in the United States: Alpines, LaMancha, Oberhasli, Nubian, Saanen, and Toggenburgs. There will also be classes for the Nigerian Dwarf, a miniature dairy goat. The public is invited and admission is free.To prepare for your adventure at the goat show, did you know?
- Male goats are called bucks, female adult goats are called does and baby goats are called kids.
- Goats were domesticated between 11,000 and 10,000 b.c. in Turkey and Iran by Neolithic farmers, who kept small herds for milk, meat, as well as using their dung for fuel and their coats for clothing and building. Swiss dairy goats came to the United States in 1940. It is estimated that there were 310,000 dairy goats in the United States in 2008. There are approximately 780 million goats in the world.
- Each breed of dairy goat produces a different tasting milk. Oberhasli goat milk tastes the closest to cow’s milk. Any thing you can make with cow’s milk you can make with goat milk. Goat milk has a higher butterfat than cow’s milk. Their milk is much easier to digest than cow’s milk and is often used for babies who have difficulty digesting cow’s milk.
- Goats are extremely picky about what they eat. They DO NOT eat tin cans and they are browsers, not grazers. Goats only have bottom front and side teeth with a large molar in the back to crush harder food. Goats will not eat food that is spoiled or hay that has fallen on the ground.
- Goats are as smart as dogs but behave more like cats. They are playful and love human contact. They generally live 10 to 15 years. They are easy to house requiring around 15 square feet of space per goat. Goats can help cut carbon emissions by replacing the lawnmower and it takes less of our resources to care for goats.

Lost Cat

Our family lives at 126 Brank Cove Road in the Upper Flat Creek community. We have lost our precious cat Mosaic. She is a Calico a little more than a year old. Her colors are white (belly), brown, orangeish and black. She is a very friendly cat who may have wandered to someone’s house where there are people or kids. Unfortunately she does not have a collar, but she is current on her shots and is spayed. My daughter is heartbroken and we are hopeful someone out there may have seen her or may be taking care of her. The last time she was seen here was Friday night. Please call if you have any information.
Thank you very much.
