State Sales Tax Holiday Aug 1-3
Someone asked me if I knew the weekend of the upcoming sales tax holiday. Here’s the info:
The 2008 North Carolina State Sales Tax Holiday begins 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 1 and runs until 11:59 p.m. Sunday, August 3. Items which can be purchased tax-free during that weekend include clothing, footwear, and school supplies of $100 or less per item; school instructional materials of $300 or less per item; sports and recreation equipment of $50 or less per item, computers of $3,500 or less per item; and computer supplies of $250 or less per item.
Clothing accessories, jewelry, cosmetics, protective equipment, wallets, furniture, items used in a trade or business, and rentals are not covered by the sales tax holiday exemption and will be subject to the applicable tax.
The full list of exempt items, frequently asked questions, and a “technical bulletin” (one of those things that most people probably never read) can be found here.
New Homeschooling Families Meetup Group
She’s not quite in Weaverville (yet), but a Woodland Hills resident wanted to invite all Weaverville homeschooling families to this newly formed meet-up group for the Asheville area. Here’s the information:

HENA will be a learning community for academic and social enrichment with resources that inspire and support self-directed, lifelong learning. HENA will be a collaboration between the children, parents and the community that offers classes, demonstrations, service, field trips and MORE:
- More community spirit for the children.
- More diverse subjects lead by people who are passionate about learning.
- More affordable group learning opportunities.
- More free time with our children.
As well as offering LESS:
- Less hassle finding exciting and enriching educational opportunities.
