Karpen Soccer Field Renovations
In November 2008 Buncombe County Parks and Recreation held an information meeting about proposed renovations to the Karpen Soccer Fields on Reems Creek Road. They were applying for a grant in order to move forward with the project, and apparently that grant came through, as Buncombe County today released this announcement about the scheduled renovations:
BUNCOMBE COUNTY ANNOUNCES RENOVATIONS TO THE KARPEN SOCCER FIELDS
Buncombe County, through its Parks, Greenways and Recreation Services Department, has contracted McGill & Associates to renovate the Karpen Soccer Fields on Reems Creek Road in Weaverville. Renovations will require this park to be closed beginning September 1, 2010. The park will reopen in the Spring of 2011.
The popular park has suffered from persistent erosion and poor drainage issues that have made the soccer fields a muddy mess after a rain. The renovations will require that the entire park be raised, graded and then a drainage system will be installed under the soccer fields. The soccer fields will then have a sod layer installed and grass will be planted over the rest of the affected area. In addition to the drainage renovations, Buncombe County will be making much needed improvements to the parking area and will build a walking trail around the soccer fields.
Progress information will be posted on the website at www.buncombecounty.org/parks

Vote for Cody – “No Spit” All Star
North Buncombe High School’s Cody Geyer is one of 10 finalists for the 2010 North Carolina Spit Tobacco Education Program (STEP) “No Spit” Baseball All-Star of the Year. This is the third year they’ve had the contest, and each finalist has signed the “No Spit” pledge not to use spit or smokeless tobacco on or off the field. Online voting began last week and will run through midnight on Sunday, May 30, 2010. The winner will be announced on Monday, May 31.
Vote online using this link and/or send an email with your vote to NCnoSpitAllStars@TheSportsFlash.com. Only vote will be counted per IP address per 24 hours (I think – the time frame wasn’t very clear in the rules). Results to date can found here.
About NC STEP…
“The North Carolina Spit Tobacco Education Program (NC STEP) assists the statewide tobacco prevention and control network in reducing spit-tobacco usage rates among North Carolina’s youth. The program provides consultation and information about spit tobacco; develops educational and school materials; provides training for the medical, dental, public health and school communities; and provides presentations to schools and youth groups.”
Geyer Sets State Record
For his 18th birthday, North Buncombe High School Senior Cody Geyer gave himself a pretty nice gift – the North Carolina home run record in baseball. Geyer hit his 45th home run last Tuesday for the record, previously set by East Rutherford’s Chad Flack in 2004. Congrats to Cody!
Colon Cancer Awareness 5k March 27
Walk with Dr. Ogg and Dry Ridge Family Medicine (including me) on March 27, 2010 to help them support Colon Cancer Awareness:
Dr. Nicole Ogg and the staff at Dry Ridge Family Medicine invite you to walk with us on March 27 at the 2010 Colon Cancer Awareness 5k Run/Walk in Asheville.
The 5K (3.1 mile) Run/Walk is scheduled for Saturday, March 27, 2010 and will start at 8 a.m. at the Asheville Gastroenterology Associates parking lot (191 Biltmore Avenue, Asheville).
This is the first year for this event, which has been put together by Asheville Gastroenterology Associates to promote the importance of colon cancer screening. March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
Despite effective tests being available, colorectal cancer screening remains underused, with less than half of the American population undergoing some form of screening. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it’s estimated that as many as 60% of colorectal cancer deaths could be prevented if all men and women aged 50 years or older were screened routinely. Colorectal Cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death, with 1 in 19 Americans developing the disease during one’s lifetime.
All proceeds from the event go to the Mission Healthcare Foundation to help fund the Mission Comprehensive Cancer Care Facility, which will bring state of the art outpatient cancer treatment to Western North Carolina.
If you’d like to walk with the Dry Ridge Family Medicine team (the Turtle Trotters), please stop by our office at 104 North Main Street and pick up a registration form. You can also visit our Events page at www.dryridgefamilymedicine.com/events.php for more information about the race or to register online.
