Colon Cancer Awareness 5k March 27
Walk with Dr. Ogg and Dry Ridge Family Medicine (including me) on March 27, 2010 to help them support Colon Cancer Awareness:
Dr. Nicole Ogg and the staff at Dry Ridge Family Medicine invite you to walk with us on March 27 at the 2010 Colon Cancer Awareness 5k Run/Walk in Asheville.
The 5K (3.1 mile) Run/Walk is scheduled for Saturday, March 27, 2010 and will start at 8 a.m. at the Asheville Gastroenterology Associates parking lot (191 Biltmore Avenue, Asheville).
This is the first year for this event, which has been put together by Asheville Gastroenterology Associates to promote the importance of colon cancer screening. March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month.
Despite effective tests being available, colorectal cancer screening remains underused, with less than half of the American population undergoing some form of screening. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it’s estimated that as many as 60% of colorectal cancer deaths could be prevented if all men and women aged 50 years or older were screened routinely. Colorectal Cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death, with 1 in 19 Americans developing the disease during one’s lifetime.
All proceeds from the event go to the Mission Healthcare Foundation to help fund the Mission Comprehensive Cancer Care Facility, which will bring state of the art outpatient cancer treatment to Western North Carolina.
If you’d like to walk with the Dry Ridge Family Medicine team (the Turtle Trotters), please stop by our office at 104 North Main Street and pick up a registration form. You can also visit our Events page at www.dryridgefamilymedicine.com/events.php for more information about the race or to register online.

Supporting the NBHS Athletic Booster Club
Now more than ever it seems our schools and school programs need our help, and North Buncombe High School athletics are no exception. Here’s a letter from North Buncombe Booster Club President Darryl Fox, who invites all members of the community to join/volunteer and show their support for our local athletes:
Dear Black Hawk Fans,
Our new 2009/2010 fiscal year began on July 1st, 2009. Those of you that have already renewed your membership or who have just joined the North Buncombe Athletic Booster Club – welcome. We, the participating members of the Booster Club, would like to help build our athletic club to a new level like others schools that we hear about throughout our area. Our goal as the Booster Club Board of directors is to develop and promote positive relationships among the students, school administration, and the community. We would also like to encourage you as members and community leaders to make donations and contributions to the North Buncombe Athletic Booster Club so we can foster and encourage education by supporting the athletic programs at North Buncombe High School.
We need your help! We can’t do this alone! We need help from not only parents, but the community as well. If you would like to renew your membership in the North Buncombe Athletic Booster Club, or join us if you have not previously been a member, it is $15 for a family membership. Your membership money will help the North Buncombe Athletic Booster Club to sponsor all athletes, and many projects we are working on for the upcoming year.
Our goal as the board of directors is to see that all athletes’ families become members of the North Buncombe Athletic Booster Club. This goal alone will insure that some of the needs of our athletes are met. We also would like to encourage past alumna and our local community to join and show your support. We understand in these tough economic times money may be an issue, so your time as a volunteer will also be greatly appreciated. If you would like to volunteer your time or have any questions feel free to contact us at nbhsblackhawknews@charter.net.

Reems Creek Golf Club Sold
I heard about the sale of Reems Creek Golf Club (36 Pink Fox Cove Road
) last week, but this press release about the sale just landed in my inbox this morning. The Golf Club was sold to Warrior Golf Properties, LLC, based out of California, and they’re evidently planning some upgrades to the bar and restaurant. No word if they’ll also be upgrading the price of membership. Here’s the release:
Warrior Golf Properties, LLC, Announces the Purchase of Reems Creek Golf Club
Irvine, CA (Vocus/PRWEB ) August 11, 2009 — Reems Creek Golf Club is recognized as one of western North Carolina’s best golf properties, consistently earning a 4 Star Rating by Golf Digest’s ”Places to Play”. Mr. Brendan Flaherty, the Manager of Warrior Golf Properties, LLC and the founder, CEO of Warrior Custom Golf Inc. based in Irvine CA stated, “We are truly excited about Reems Creek and look forward to building upon the success that the course has enjoyed over the past 20 years.”
Reems Creek Golf Club is located only 15 minutes from Asheville in the picturesque community of Weaverville, North Carolina. The popular semi-private club opened for play in 1989 and was designed by Hawtree & Son of Oxford, England (designers of Royal Birkdale site of the 2008 British Open). Reems Creek offers a Scottish Highland look with rolling terrain and large knolls, featuring over 130 acres of beautifully manicured bent grass fairways, large greens, and tees.
The purchase was finalized on Friday July 31, 2009. The initial owners included Lee King, Jim Floyd, Bill Robinson and golf analyst Ben Wright. Part of the former ownership group included legendary basketball coach Dean Smith. Reems Creek is the fourth golf property purchased by affiliated companies of Warrior Custom Golf, Inc. Other recent acquisitions include The Club at Runaway Bay in Lake Bridgeport, Texas, and Marion Oaks Country Club and Huntington Golf Club, both located in Ocala, Florida.
Larry Carter, the long time manager at Reems Creek, received an enthusiastic vote of confidence from Warrior as did the rest of the current staff and employees. During a meeting with key personnel at the club Mr. Flaherty said, ”I would like to express the confidence I have your professional attitude and believe you possess the capability to execute our plans for improvements to the Club House and growth of the business”. Larry was particularly excited about the plans for upgrading the bar and restaurant with upscale furnishings and big screen TV’s saying, ”The membership would enjoy the improvements and likely attract new patrons”.
The Warrior management team also met with Jack Cloninger, president of the local Home Owners Association, and discussed ways the HOA and Warrior could work together to expand the relationship of the Club with the members of the community. Jack explained, ”The HOA members and other local residents welcome the energy and enthusiasm that Warrior brings to the community. We want to continue to utilize the Clubhouse for the various seasonal events hosted by the HOA and expand participation.”

Location Change for NBHS Baseball Playoff
North Buncombe High School’s baseball team will have the home field advantage after all tonight (Tuesday, May 26) when they take on Tuscola in the 3-A Western Regional semifinal of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association State Playoffs. North Buncombe originally earned that advantage after defeating Foard in the second round, but North Buncombe’s baseball field doesn’t have lights and the NCHSAA stipulates games must start at 7 p.m., so the game was moved to a neutral field (at Reynolds High School). All the rain in East Asheville, however, left their field too soggy, so the game was moved back to North Buncombe and the start time changed to 5 p.m.
Confused? Here’s what you need to know:
NCHSAA Baseball Playoffs: 3-A Western Regional Semifinal
If you can’t go but want to keep up with the game, the Citizen-Times’ Andrew Pearson will be live blogging it on the HS Sports Huddle blog.
Update: Tuscola defeated North Buncombe 9-7.

The Blue Ridge Rollergirls are, as far as I know, Western North Carolina’s only all-female roller derby team. Not sure if we have any Weavervillians on the team, but the Rollergirls have given me 5 pairs of tickets to give away this season, good for any of their home games.
For your chance to win, leave a comment by clicking the Comments link at the end of this post. You don’t need to register to do so. Say what you like, even if it’s just “enter.” I’ll randomly pick one winner every Friday at 4 p.m. over the next 5 weeks, beginning today. Winners will be notified by e-mail. You can only win once.
