Becky Stone as Pauli Murray March 16

Special program sponsored bythe Friends of the Weaverville Library on March 16:

Becky Stone portrays North Carolinian Pauli Murray at the Weaverville Library (41 North Main Street) on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 7 p.m.  Join this beloved local performer as she reprises her Chautauqua portrayal of this historically significant daughter of North Carolina.

Pauli Murray was the first African American woman to be ordained in the Episcopal Church and preached her first service at the same church that her grandmother had been baptized in as a slave the century before.  She was a lawyer, writer and activist as well as a lifelong friend of Eleanor Roosevelt.  Get to know her and her accomplishments in this intimate portrait by local performer Becky Stone.

Forgotten Genius Feb. 9

For Black History Month the Weaverville Library (41 North Main Street) presents “Forgotten Genius” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, February 9, 2010:

The Friends of the Weaverville Library will screen the documentary “Forgotten Genius” about the life and work of American chemist Percy Julian on Tuesday, February 9 at 7 p.m. The grandson of Alabama slaves, Julian met with every possible barrier in a deeply segregated America. He won worldwide acclaim for his work in organic chemistry, and as the first black director of an industrial chemical research lab.  For more information, call the Library at 250-6482.

Film Night at the Weaverville Library: Forgotten Genius
Tuesday, February 9, 7 p.m.
The Friends of the Weaverville Library will show the film “Forgotten Genius” about the life of African-American chemist Percy Julian.  The grandson of Alabama slaves, Julian met with every possible barrier in a deeply segregated America.  He broke the color barrier in American science more than a decade before Jackie Robinson did so in Major League Baseball.  He converted soybeans into synthetic steroids on an industrial scale, and his innovative approach helped make drugs like cortisone affordable and available to millions.  A discussion will follow the film.

Preschoolers We Love You!
February 10
Shows at 9:30 a.m. & 10:45 a.m.
Librarians are practicing animal noises and silly songs in preparation for the 24th annual production of “Preschoolers We Love You!” This popular kids’ show began as a special valentine to the library’s under-five set and now regularly draws over 1,000 children for the multiple performances. The program is a musical revue especially for preschoolers, with puppets, dancing and other lighthearted nonsense. The talented performers are drawn from the library staff across the county.

All shows are free, but groups need to call 250-4729 to make a reservation. If you miss the show in person, the production will also be televised on the Buncombe County television channel, BCTV. Check buncombecounty.org for listings.

Bilingual Bedtime Story Time

A social knitting/handcrafters group open to everyone has been meeting on Tuesdays at the Weaverville Library (41 North Main Street). It’s free to participate and doesn’t require registration.  More info and dates/times:

A talk on “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain will be given at the Weaverville Library on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at 7 p.m. by retired literature professor and College for Seniors instructor Nancy Lewis. Come and hear why this is one of the most frequently challenged and banned books in America and how its literary value has endured for over a century. Used Book Sale Sept. 5

The Friends of the Weaverville Library are holding a Used Book Sale Saturday, September 5 at the Weaverville Library (41 North Main Street).  The sale lasts from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and they’ll have everything from mysteries to non-fiction to children’s books.

Proceeds from the book sales help the Friends provide:

  • Special library programs for adults and children (3-4 annually)
  • Library building and equipment improvements not funded by local government
  • Craft materials for children’s programs
  • Ongoing landscaping and beautification services
  • Purchases of Compact Disc books and music
  • Support of related community activities
  • Photocopier services for community use

You can also join the Friends of the Weaverville Library.  Membership costs a whopping $5/year. I’m sure they’ll have membership applications at the Book Sale, or you can pick them up anytime at the library.
