The Weaverville Library Friends will hold their annual Labor Day weekend used book sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 4, 2010 on the lower level of the Weaverville Library. Fiction and non-fiction will be divided into various categories as well as children’s books, audio books, movies and music. Each item is priced individually. The Library is located at 41 N. The classic Italian neo-realist film “Umberto D” will be screened at the Weaverville Library on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at 7 p.m. Directed by Vittorio De Sica, shot on location in Rome in 1952 and starring a cast of nonprofessional actors, the film tells the story of an elderly pensioner trying to survive in a time and place where human kindness and the forces of modernization clash. Becky Stone portrays North Carolinian Pauli Murray at the Weaverville Library (41 North Main Street) on Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 7 p.m. Join this beloved local performer as she reprises her Chautauqua portrayal of this historically significant daughter of North Carolina.
Pauli Murray was the first African American woman to be ordained in the Episcopal Church and preached her first service at the same church that her grandmother had been baptized in as a slave the century before. She was a lawyer, writer and activist as well as a lifelong friend of Eleanor Roosevelt. Get to know her and her accomplishments in this intimate portrait by local performer Becky Stone.

The Friends of the Weaverville Library will screen the documentary “Forgotten Genius” about the life and work of American chemist Percy Julian on Tuesday, February 9 at 7 p.m. The grandson of Alabama slaves, Julian met with every possible barrier in a deeply segregated America. He won worldwide acclaim for his work in organic chemistry, and as the first black director of an industrial chemical research lab. For more information, call the Library at 250-6482.

The Friends of the Weaverville Library will show the film “Forgotten Genius” about the life of African-American chemist Percy Julian. The grandson of Alabama slaves, Julian met with every possible barrier in a deeply segregated America. He broke the color barrier in American science more than a decade before Jackie Robinson did so in Major League Baseball. He converted soybeans into synthetic steroids on an industrial scale, and his innovative approach helped make drugs like cortisone affordable and available to millions. Librarians are practicing animal noises and silly songs in preparation for the 24th annual production of “Preschoolers We Love You!” This popular kids’ show began as a special valentine to the library’s under-five set and now regularly draws over 1,000 children for the multiple performances. The program is a musical revue especially for preschoolers, with puppets, dancing and other lighthearted nonsense. The talented performers are drawn from the library staff across the county.All shows are free, but groups need to call 250-4729 to make a reservation.
