Girl Scout Fall Nut Sale

As part of the 2008 Fall Nut Sale Fundraiser, Weaverville Girl Scout Troop 26 will be selling Girl Scout Nuts & Candy at the following locations:

Friday, November 21, 6-8 p.m. at Flick Video (3 Tri City Plaza )
Saturday, November 22, 10 a.m.-Noon at Advance Auto Parts (111 Weaver Blvd. )
Saturday, November 22, 10 a.m.-Noon at ACE Hardware (61 Weaver Blvd. )

Girl Scout Troop 26 is a troop of Daisy, Brownies, Juniors and Cadettes who come from North Buncombe and meet at the Weaverville United Methodist Church. New girls are welcome to join at any of their meetings.

Coat Drive

This year Chiropractor Mark Nance is sponsoring his first coat drive for needy families in our community. His office is collecting coats of any size which they will be donating to local charities, including North Buncombe Samaritan Ministries. If you’d like to donate, they are accepting clean, gently used, or new coats until December 12 at their office (169 North Main Street ). Their office is open Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays 9 a.m.-Noon and 2-6 p.m., and on Tuesdays 2-6 p.m.

Karpen Field Project Community Meeting Nov. 20

Buncombe County Parks and Recreation is planning a renovation of Karpen Soccer Fields (207 Reems Creek Road ) and will be holding an information and public comment session about it at 6 p.m., Thursday, November 20 at Weaverville Town Hall (30 South Main Street ). The project is slated to include a renovated soccer field, walking trail, playground, picnic area, bathroom facilities, and new parking area.

Third Thursday Fundraiser Nov. 20

Blue Mountain Pizza’s (55 North Main Street ) next Third Thursday fundraiser is this Thursday, November 20. They’ll be donating 10% of the day’s receipts, plus matching 100% of the money donated in their cash box (next to the register), to the Weaverville Cops for Kids Toy Drive.

Aiken Road Bridge Construction

Just a reminder that 19-23 Northbound will be closed again this weekend while repair work continues on the Aiken Road bridge. The detour will be in place beginning at 7 p.m. tonight through 11 a.m. Monday.

Detour route:
Detour: All US 19 23 Northbound (Future I 26 West) traffic must detour at Exit 21 (New Stock Road). At the bottom of the exit ramp turn left onto New Stock Road and follow New Stock Road for 2.5 mi. to Monticello Road. At Monticello Road, turn right and follow Monticello Road for 1.0 mi. to US 25 70. At US 25 70, turn right and follow US 25 70 for 0.5 mi. to US 19 23 (Future I 26). Please note that motorists traveling on US 19 23 Business will not have direct access to New Stock Road or US 19 23 (Future I 26) at the New Stock Road Interchange. In addition, motorists exiting US 19 23 (Future I 26) at New Stock Road will not have access to US 19 23 Business. US 19 23 Business can still be accessed via other interchange points along this corridor.

As we give thanks for all the Weaverville community has given us during the year, we invite those who might be alone or in need to join us for a FREE Thanksgiving Dinner on Thursday, November 27 from Noon to 3 p.m.

On this day we will be putting our pizza ovens to rest and serving a traditional Thanksgiving meal of turkey, ham, dressing, sweet and mashed potatoes, beans, pies, and all the trimmings. We will have holiday music, plenty of great food and a few surprises. Everyone is welcome.

AskAsheville took this close-up video of the new Lowe’s and Wal-Mart buildings in the Northridge Commons development. There’s still no official word on when the stores will be opening, though I’ve heard Lowe’s may open in March and Wal-Mart in May.

NBHS Football First Round Playoff Game Nov. 14

North Buncombe High School Varsity football plays at Fred T. Foard High School in Newton, NC () on Friday, November 14 in the first round of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 3-A West State Playoffs. North Buncombe finished their regular season 7-3, while Foard is 8-2. Game time is 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $6.

Update: North Buncombe won 21-6. The Black Hawks travel to Winston-Salem to play Carver High School (10-2) in the second round of the 3-A playoffs on Friday, November 21. Game time is 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $6.

Weaverville Milling Open for Thanksgiving

Weaverville Milling Company (1 Old Mill Lane ) will be open for Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 27):

The Weaverville Milling Restaurant will be open at noon on Thanksgiving. We will serve a traditional Thanksgiving Feast just like grandmothers: Turkey/cornbread stuffing and Roast Beef with two veggies, sweet and mashed potatoes, fresh cranberry relish, garden salad and assorted rolls and muffins. Weaverville Elementary Yard Sale Nov. 15

There’s going to be a Yard Sale at Weaverville Elementary School (129 South Main Street ) on November 15 to help raise funds for landscaping projects and their brand new Gardening Club. They’re also looking for donations to sell during the sale, as well as volunteers to help out. Here’s the details:

The Landscaping Committee is hosting a Yard Sale at Weaverville Elementary School on November 15 from 8 a.m. until Noon. All proceeds from the sale will be used for landscaping projects, greenhouse supplies and also for the new Gardening Club, which will start the week of November 18.

We are in need of your help and would really appreciate any items from home that you may be able to donate (please do not send in used clothing or bedding). We will have a drop off station at the Elementary School in the afternoons from 2:30-3:15 p.m. through November 14. Items should be dropped off at the YMCA After-school trailer entrance.

We are also in need of volunteers to help us set up on Friday evening and also to help on the Saturday morning. If you are available to help, please call 645-9508 or email Tany@hughes.net.
